My Dams Information

A Dam blocks the flow of water.  Lakes must pass around or through the barriers. Dams are built across streams or estuaries. They are there to prevent floods.

Dams are built to retain water and are used for fishing, and to block flood waters. Dams are also there to assist with generating hydropower in our homes.

Watercare operates fourteen supply dams. Five of them are located in the Waitakere Ranges, two near Helensville, and four are located in the Hunua Ranges.

The Dams take  80% of Auckland’s water. After World War 2, dams were made from earth and rocks.  The Dams receive 18 metres of each year.

In the Watakere Ranges, there are five dams, three concrete dams, and three earth dams. The Waitakere Ranges dams only provide 20% of Auckland’s water.
